Renault Clio Cup Championship - Rounds 5 & 6, Brands Hatch GP 1st/2nd May 2010
Dave ‘Brands’ His Name to the Top of The Leaderboard
Rounds 5 & 6 of the 2010 Elf Renault Clio Cup Championship were held at Brands Hatch, Kent. Racing on the full GP circuit, a magnificent track that Dave enjoys driving.
In the first practice session Dave set the 3rd best time, just over 1/10th of a second behind Sam Tordoff (44) and Tom Carnaby (2). Dave wasn’t particularly concerned though as he was driving on very worn tyres. Session 2 and new tyres were bolted to the car - he went straight to the top of the timesheets, this time by 4/10th of a second and Dave’s smile returned... The session was brought to a premature end however when James Dixon (3) crashed heavily! He wrote his Clio off and would take no further part in the meeting, a real shame as this is his local circuit, he quite literally lives 5 miles from the track.
Qualifying
Dave once again shot to the top of the timesheets and stayed there all session. His time of 1.28.841 was a massive 8/10th of a second faster than Phil Glew’s pole-position time from last year and 1.2 seconds faster than he managed last year. 2nd as usual was Sam Tordoff and his team-mate Mike Robinson (22) was 3rd.
Race One
From pole position Dave made his customary good start to lead the field into the first bend. He completed the first lap pulling one second ahead of the pack when the safety car was deployed. Alistair Barclay (8) had lost control exiting ‘Sheen’ hitting the barriers and coming to rest back on the circuit. After two laps, the safety car pulled in and the race was underway again. Dave started to pull clear of Sam once again, however he remembered that at Rockingham Sam started to close the gap from half-distance. Dave concentrated on not making mistakes and pushed hard to pull as big a gap as possible - he continued to pull away and he crossed the line 5.285 seconds clear of Sam Tordoff, followed by James Colburn (9). Dave also set the fastest lap of the race which was 1.2 seconds faster than last year’s fastest lap. Dave was quite literally in a class of his own...
Race Two
The forecast was for rain, and the prediction didn’t disappoint! It was cold too. Again Dave was on pole and he made his usual good start to lead into the first corner. Just behind him however mayhem was taking place - Fulvio Mussi (23) hit the side of Sam Tordoff sending Sam into the gravel trap - with damage to his car his race was over. James Colburn also spun in avoidance but rejoined the race a long way down the field. Out in front Dave was being closed down by Mike Robinson (22). On the third lap Mike passed Dave who was struggling with zero grip. He pulled away and Dave was then closed down by the three JHR team-mates Fulvio Mussi, Tom Carnaby (2) and Lee Pattison (5).
Dave made a mistake as he lost the rear of his car on entry into ‘Surtees’ sending him wide. Both Fulvio and Tom passed him pushing him down to fourth. Dave could barely hang on to the two JHR cars which seemed to have more grip at this point of the race. Up ahead on the very same corner Mike made the same mistake as Dave and he lost four positions.
Dave was back into a podium place. Lap 8 and Dave’s car was starting to behave itself and he was putting Tom under pressure. With a great move Dave cut back passing Tom exiting ‘Clearways’. In his slip-stream, Lee also passed Tom. Within half a lap Dave was onto the tailgate of Fulvio, however as he was ‘eyeing’ a pass, Lee caught Dave out by passing him. Two corners later Lee shot down the inside of Fulvio and Dave followed him through to take 2nd place again. With two laps to go Dave had not given up on taking the win, however he lost the rear of the car again nearly sending him off the track. With the championship in mind Dave settled for second place, crossing the line just over one second behind Lee. Tom found his way past Fulvio to take the final podium position. The fastest lap would go to Dave’s team mate Jack Goff (33) who would pass Mike Robinson on the final corner to take 5th.

Dave is already talking to BTCC teams about 2011, as he wants to fulfil his life-long ambition of becoming a Touring Car driver. There is no question he is good enough to be a front runner in BTCC, let’s hope that he can raise the massive budget needed to prove it. Most large companies advertising budgets are set mid-year, this is why Dave needs to start working on this now.
Should anyone out there want to support Dave in his quest to race in the BTCC, please contact him so that he can show the benefits of this type of advertising.
Rounds 7 & 8 will be held at Oulton Park, Cheshire on 5 & 6 June, so a long five weeks to wait till then. Dave loves this track as do most racing drivers. Let’s hope that his TV jinx is finally broken at Oulton and we, his faithful followers can watch him win his first race on TV this season….
